Cinthe Sinte Sinte is a rhythm from the region of the city Boke, Boffa and their surroundings. In this part of Guinea, The Landuma and Nalu people are present and use this rhythm as a pre-initiation dance. This rhythm was also sometimes played by women on the Krin. It has now become very popular because of its melody and the variety of dances associated to it. Frédéric BARRACO 2012-02-12

Conga for 2 For 3 congas + bell and bomba (floor tom) 1. On the beat 1&. 3/4 2. 2/3 2&. 3/4 3. On the beat 3&. 3/4 4. 2/3 4&. 3/4 In the opening break, notes 2 & 4 are advanced by only 1/4 . This conga is for two players. One on congas and one with a cowbell and bombo (or floor tom). The rhythm works best without much variation, if any. The bell has two patterns and so does the bombo - so that's four combinations Here again, I have the conga central, quinto to the left, and tumba to the right Tim Rowley 2003-08-15

Djembe beginners basic for 4 This rhythm is created by Dave Muijen with the purpose of teaching absolute beginners the basics of djembe. I try to keep the basic patterns simple, but yet to create a nice polyrhythm so it does get a nice groove. This file is presented to you by me - online known under SjpielseWolf. These sort of files will be presented on my website: www.sjpielsewolf.wordpress.com If you want to contact me, find me on facebook under sjpielsewolf. Fanga Babatunde Olatunji Fanga is a welcome rhythm from Liberia that has been tought by Babatunde Olatunji, a West African Percussion teacher, who with his lessons and personality, inspired many djembe players in the United States. When a drummer plays the low part of this rhythm, he mimes the action of a cook pulling hot pieces of food from a steaming pot. Dinner will be served! The transcriptions are from various email exchanges throughout the Djembe-L mailinglist. The song he used to sing to accompany the rhythm is in the Yoruba language. Fanga alafayia, ashe ashe (4x) Ashe, Ashe, ashe, ashe. Ikabo alafiya, ashe ashe (4x) Ashe, Ashe, ashe, ashe. Eluga alafiya Ashe, Ashe, ashe, ashe. Arthur Prelle 2012-11-19

Guarachongo This is a rhythm I've been playing around with for a few years now. The Tumba comes from the Bombo part of the song "Congas de mi Cuba" by Los Papines. It is played with a combination of open and muffled strokes to mimic the Bombo. The left hand fills in on the high conga drum and the right plays open and slap strokes to fill in. It is a free style rhythm that could be used for Guaracha, Songo or Conga. For a conga rhythm, you might add another conga part (Salidor). The high and low bells are played by the timbale player. Entonces, Conga + Songo + Guaracha = Guarachongo. Seen here first on Henry Kellner's website 11/12/08. Enjoy! Robin Young 2008-12-11
Guiro Afro Cuban with 'natural feeling' - 3 shekere parts Written on 12/8 instead of 6/8 for greater control. What I am calling notes 1,2,&3 are 1,5,&7. I should call them One, And, A then Two, And, A to complete one bar Note 1 On the beat Note 2 1/4 early Note 3 1/3 early Notes 4,5,&6 repeat this The Shaker Afro and the Shekere act together as one shekere. The Axatse ignoes this time rule and in each bar counts One, And, Two, And, Three, And Each 'And' is a1/4 late This interplay is accentuated by the changing volume levels. Knock out the other instruments and hear them The conga plays between these different feels. The bell and clave also alter slightly When I was shown this Cuban rhythm I was told that one only plays a slap or a bass note with the right hand because it was traditionally played with a frame drum on the left shoulder Tim Rowley 2003-08-13

Kpan Logo for three congas Written for three congas. Quinto - centre, Conga - left, Tumba - right. It begins with a groove I play. It can be played quite quickly (up to 220) though it looks complicated at first glance. It's worth looking at the sections in repeat marks as the basic grooves. I can't play all of this (yet) but I shall be printing it out to learn sections Tim Rowley 2003-08-11

More Ghana Inspired by Kpan-Logo and Ashanti music A rhythm inspired by Ghanian music. It contains some elements from High Life and KpanLogo and from Ashanti rhythms. The basic rhythm is written on straight 1/8 notes with some solo phrases spanning from one point in time to another in a given number of steps giving new note lengths. In the second half, parts of the basic rhythm 'escape' from squareness of 1/8 notes, giving a particular lilt or groove. Tim Rowley 2003-08-10

Obatala - AfroShock a fuller interpretation of the song by AfroShock The song is from the Album by 'Afro Shock' called Acccomodating Gods. This duo are brilliant ! and perform AfroCuban songs as a duo with kit and congas live with harmonised vocals. This is for one player on congas. The bomba at the end is from the kit bass drum, and the kit player supplies the bell rhythm. I haven't interpreted all of the kit parts. Tim Rowley 2003-10-06

This duo are brilliant ! and perform AfroCuban songs as a duo with kit and congas live with harmonised vocals. This is for one player. the left on the high drum doing slaps, the other hand on the other two drums, and the cowbell on the foot. Shifting cascara Trickier than the sands of the Sahara The cascara moves by 1/2 a beat and the rhythm moves from mambo to guaguanco with a new start point and back. This is acheived by playing the the cascara accentuating the second note of each 'double' played (a common salsa pulse). It then plays only the accentuated notes, and if you look, the spaces left played by the other hand , become the new cascara but with a new start point. Easy. You just have to get the rest of the band to play it now ! Tim Rowley 2003-09-14

Tanamasi Tanamasi is a traditional Malinke greeting that translates literally as "Did you sleep without evil?", eg, did you have nice dreams and not woken with angst. I thought it is a great greeting, and I thought I would do something in 3/4 time, transposed as 12/8 to make it easier to see, but it is definitely "waltzy". wayne alford 2008-07-17

Toca Loca Tamara Schroeter 2002-06-15
Today IS a good day Luis Cubero 2009-02-16
Toque - 1 player Here is a toque transfered from bata. 6/8 The right hand plays the 6/8 clave and a high drum with a stick - except for one note that coincides with the bell. 4/4 One hand can play the clave and high drum. It's a great combination the folkloric clave with a pulse from 6/8. I have applied this with guaguanco and conga rhythms on the other hand. I have began with the 4/4 clave as I first worked it out and got used to playing it. I was later informed that the clave was the wrong way round. The correct way for a toque is shown in the second 4/4 section. Tim Rowley 2003-08-13

Yankadi3 Here is a Yankadi played in the traditional sense as an intro to the Macrou. The Yankadi is a slow African line dance. The faster Macrou is the seduction dance. The Djole is also present to break up the monotony of the macrou and it is just fun to play. The White Claws 2005-11-20

Yole-Epizo Epizo Bangoura taught me this version of Yole at Bundagen, Bongil-Bongil National Park, in northern New South Wales, Australia, in October 2007. The second accompaniment (Djembe 2) is unusual. The variation creates a cycle length of 16 beats, whereas the normal accompaniment has a length of 8 beats and simply repeats the first half of the 16-beat accompaniment shown here. The intro, breaks and bridge are exactly as taught by Epizo, without embellishments. The solo in part 2 is not Epizo's but my own, cobbled together from various phrases I've heard other drummers play with Yole, as well as a few phrases of my own. Michael Henning 2008-07-06
